Historic Korean Dessert - Hwang nam bbang

Okay, this isn't exactly a restaurant, I know.
However it's another MUST EAT whenever you're in Kyung-ju.
The Hwang nam bbang business has been family owned through 3 generations now,
quite possibly one of the oldest confectionaries in Korea.

Another place you can get this local fare is at the Daegu train station.
Although at Daegu you will not be able to try these hot.

Recently, I've had the pleasure to finally visit their original location in Kyung-ju

Aaaak! Pleasures galore!

People with like 10 bags of Hwang Nam Bbang.
Kind of a common sight here, when you watch people come and go.

Look at all the red bean paste!

The look of a freshly baked Hwang Nam Bbang -- yum yum!

If you're in Kyung-ju, do take the time to visit because
fresh Hwang Nam Bbang tastes quite different from ones that have been cooled.

They're both good in my opinion, but in different ways.
The cold Hwang Nam Bbang has a doughy texture to its skin,
where as the fresh one does not.

The fresh one of course has a (very) hot filling,
wrapped in skin that has a little bite.
However so thin,
the crisp is quickly dissolved into sweet goodness with the bean paste.

Even if you're not a fan or red bean or red bean paste...

Just try it.

Shame on you, if you've traveled all the way to Kyung-ju
and didn't even bother to try one, just because you don't like red bean paste!

Although not on the menu, they sell individually which costs 800 won?

The friend I traveled with sent a box to her family,
who assumably "doesn't like bean paste".
(She herself claimed that she dislikes bean paste as well...)

However, the story was that when the box of Hwang Nam Bbang arrived
-- by the time she got up from a nap, the whole box was gone.
Her brother and her mother the culprit of this box-emptying!

---------------

For the ones who don't have the luxury to visit either Daegu or Kyung-ju,
Do not fret!
They offer delivery to all locations within Korea for +2500
(unless you're located within Jeju island)
free of charge if your order sums to 50,000 won or more.

Hwang nam Bbangs stay good in cool room temperature for about 5 days.
Afterwards you can choose to freeze them...

So I've received my Hwang nam bbang the next day here:

Yum Yum.
Be aware of the look-a-likes such as Kyung-ju bbang (경주빵)
which is available at any major train station.
If it's too easily accessible, it is probably because it's not that good.
Not saying that that's always the case, though.
