Historic Korean - Mabang-jip

This place is a tad bit away from Seoul,
don't think it would be easy to travel here via public transportation.

It's one of the more historic places around, having opened their doors at 1918.
They specialize in their Korean style 'hansang cha-rim'
which is basically rice, stew, and a bunch of side dishes that fill up the table.
You can order additional side dishes aside from the ones given to you.

It's a sizable restaurant, which has maintained their
traditional exterior & interior as well.

The restaurant is quite popular, with people coming to eat here from elsewhere
thus they have a reasonably large parking lot

Some antique looking payphone. Wonder if it works.

Inside, there's a small tunnel-type hall
which leads you outside to other parts of the restaurant

Props that can be seen inside the tunnel

Washroom

the customers are escorted into a room to enjoy their foods...

Rooms, rooms, and more rooms.

Some outdoors-y stuff

Below are large pots that the Koreans traditionally keep their Kimchi
and other sauces
they are at times buried to fermentate

I apologize about the long wait, now inside one of the rooms.
The neat part about this place is, if you come early enough
-- or during hours when the restaurant isn't busy,
you and your party can have the whole room to yourselves.

Here are some photos of were you'll eat.
Sorry again, they were taken after the meal,
but hopefully the table and the closed doors give a good idea in regards to its size.

It's quite traditional, with elevated deck and heated flooring
You'll have to take off your shoes and sit on the floor ;-)

Le menu

Korean style jung-shik (white rice with side dishes) 11,000
Beef barbecued on natural charcoal 15,000
Pork barbecued on natural charcoal 10,000
Barbecued Korean root "Duduck" 9,000
Bo Kimchi (Kimchi to wrap your meat in -- I presume) 8,000
Barley rice (usually comes in a big bowl to make bibimbab) 11,000
Barbecued corvinas

Each room has it's own thermos too.
You can raise your floor temperature!

Booze, your typical Korean fare.
Local beer, soju, sansachun, dongdongju (kind of like makgulli)

They serve tea instead of water

Some articles Mabang-jip was introduced in.
They were about "old restaurants in Korea" & "Korean style restaurants"

Now the food.
At 11,000 per person + meat sides (15,000 & 10,000)
it's pretty good amount of eats

Pork Barbecue

Beef Barbecue

Instead of dessert, they give you nurung-ji (& soongnyung)
near the end of your meal.

It's pretty much overcooked rice softened inside hot water.
Very Korean.

Apparently this place was originally a "horse stationing restaurant"
back in the days.
This is also implied in the name "Mabang" as well.

The cute bill!

Overview

It's really a fun experience overall, and it's a lot of food.
The beef was pretty fragrant with barbecue smell and all,
but honestly I enjoyed the pork more.

Can't say this was the best Korean food I've had,
but it was good to go.

If there are plans to venture out of the city with a car,
try this place out
