Korean - Yangdaegop

So, I read in the paper a few days back, that Korea has the most
luxury whisky (whisky that is 17 years and over) consumption in the world
-- beating even the US, one of the world's largest market.

They've maintained this position for the last eleven years, apparently.
The numbers for luxury whisky sales in 2011 was:

Korea at first place with 698,000 cases
Second place, the United States with 478,000 cases.

The consumption difference is quite great even between first and second place,
what's more astonishing is that the US has six times the population of Korea.

So all in all, Koreans really like their drink.
Honestly, it doesn't limit to just expensive Scotch.

Whether it's local soju or beer;
it's happy hour, every hour, if you're in Korea.

A local tradition here in this country is to go eat something broth-y
after a long night of drinking.

It can be in the morning, if you've been drinking all night Friday
and your friends are still alive and around past dawn.
Or in the wee hours of the night, such as 3 or 4 on a Wednesday, Thursday
you'll be able to see a ton of people at a broth-y restaurant.

Outside Korea, you can probably see a lot of Korean people
at a Pho restaurant near closing hours, following their tradition.

So here we are.

A famous broth restaurant in Jeju Island, Yangdaegop.

Small little restaurant, we arrived 8:15 ish
but the restaurant was nearly full.
They open at 8AM, by the way!

Closed on the first and third Monday.

Le menu

Haejang guk - This is the post-drink elixir that Koreans generally have
Honestly, it was quite good here. Maybe even a ten.
They put blood lumps (cow) inside the broth, which might put many off.
You can ask to have the broth without it though

Naejang tang - Literal translation would be "Organ stew"
And yes, it's a broth with a bunch of cow organs in it.
Haven't had it, but I'm sure it's good.

Gom Tang - the least spicy, and the most approachable.
It's a bone-broth soup, where cow bones have been brewed
-- for hours and hours on end.

Gopchang Jeongol - this feeds more than one.
Description says "spicy beef tripe casserole" but not sure what casserole their
talking about since it is like no casserole I've ever had...
Perhaps it means that it stews in front of you in a large casserole type bowl.
This contains organs too, the "tripe" one is on the far left
and one with just intestines is the one that's on right of it

General place setting

If you get "gom tang", make sure you dip your meat in that soy sauce looking sauce!
It's not soy sauce by the way, and it goes extremely well with the meat.

Haejang guk

Gom tang
(nope, not pronounced like the orange beverage mix. more like t-ah-ng)

The broths do not come seasoned, so make sure to adjust it to your liking!

Their semi-open concept kitchen.
