Historic Bakery - Sung Sim Dang (成心堂)

One of the most historic eats in Daejeon is Sung Sim Dang.
It's a bakery that's been around for ages around here,
but despite their success they've never expanded until very recently.

And even then, it's only in the Daejeon area!
So make sure to visit and buy a ton of bread when you're here.

En suite: the way to Sung Sim Dang

They've done so well, they own several restaurants here such as this one:

I've never been, so I can't speak for their food.
But here's what they sell, and I'm sure there's more inside:

The main Sung Sim Dang building

Another notable thing about this place is that they've been visited by the
Michelin guide a few years back

Inside...

Absolutely love these.
Rice cakes filled with nuts and red bean paste
(my favorite is the green one)

Their mugs signed by famous people

here, we can see the signatures of the people in this upcoming
Korean presidential election...

Their deep-fried 'soboru' which is their most popular item.
Their last batch comes out at 5PM

On the 2nd floor of the bakery, they run a cafeteria-type restaurant.
On your way there, you'll see this on the wall...

I just love old photos of what the restaurants used to be!

Self-serve, paid by weight

Guess what?

I found another Sung Sim Dang at the Daejeon train station.
They've opened quite recently, and is one of the 2? other locations they have.

The boxes for deep fried soboro.
I wasn't kidding when I said they were popular...

Overview

This isn't the typical western bakery you're used to,
so the bread might not always agree with you.
Nor is it the usual Japanese style breads you find all over Korea either.
Perhaps that's what makes Sung Sim Dang special.

They've created a lot of authentic recipes, many of their breads
baked with a chewy ricecake-like center.

The key to their success was offering bread samples,
though now with their almost excessive popularity it seems almost unnecessary.
Nonetheless, they continue on with their tradition to do so.

A must must must visit when you're in Daejeon.
Their menu changes seasonally as well,
so there's joy of returning again during different times of the year
